Commonwealth Festival of Lifesaving Durban, South Africa, 2017


Six members of the Crawley Town Life Saving Club recently travelled to the King’s Park Olympic Pool,  Durban, South Africa to compete as part of the England team in the new look “Commonwealth Festival of Lifesaving” as opposed to previous the International Lifesaving based Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships.

In the National Team Championships which involved 6 nations, the English team finished 3rd overall behind Australia and the hosts South Africa, while in the Development team championships England manage to overall the hosts and finish second just behind the Australians who currently rank number two in competitive World Lifesaving.

Representing the National ladies for Crawley Town was Lucy Howes who best performance was a 4th in the Rescue Medley relay, Sam Lawman who took an individual gold in 50m Carry in a personal best time just 0.5 second away from the current British record and team gold in the 4 x 25m manikin relay along with Crawley Town team mate Richard Jagger who also took gold in the individual Simulated Emergency Rescue Competition (SERC).

For the Development team Vicky Threfall highest individual finish was 5th in the gruelling Super Lifesaver, with two bronzes in the ladies 4x 25m Manikin and 4 x 50m Medley relays. For the Development men Martin Schofield who competed earlier this year in the U19 age group finished 2nd in a new event called the 50m non-contact tow in front of his Crawley Town team mate Elliot Key who finished 4th. Martin gained gold in the 4 x25m Manikin relay team and Elliot a bronze in the dry side SERC.

The English squad was coached by the current double British record holder Simon Worne who sadly was unable to compete on this occasion following a recent operation but hope to be back fit ready for next year’s national championships.
