Lifesaving Newsletter - June 2017

Read on to find out more about local clubs successes, Sussex Branch Diamond Celebrations, Lifesaving Competitions, and a copy of our Branch Diary of Events for you to download.

Across Sussex we will be supporting the RLSS UK Drowning Prevention Week during 16th-20th June 2017. Many clubs are holding events in their local area, including school talks, meet Perry and sharing water safety advice in local shopping and leisure centers. Please share your photos with us.

Join Our Diamond Celebrations

This year the RLSS Sussex Branch celebrates its Diamond (60th) Birthday. The Branch has set up a Diamond Committee to organise special events to mark its birthday. These are the events organised so far!

Bowling Social - Saturday 8th July

Please join us for a social bowling event at Freedom Leisure in Hailsham on Saturday 8th July 2017 at 7pm. £12.50 each, including food and two games. Book your place here. Please book before the 2nd July.

Dinner Dance - Saturday 16th September

Please join us for a celebratory dinner dance to mark the 60th Anniversary of the RLSS Sussex Branch on Saturday 16th September at the White Hart Hotel in Lewes. Further details, including menu choices and how to book your place can be found here

Swim 60 Fundraising Challenge

We are challenging lifesavers across the county to take part in a sponsored challenge to raise funds for both the RLSS Sussex Branch and your lifesaving club. The challenge is to swim 60 lengths in one session. You are welcome to make the challenge more challenging, if you wish. For example, by wearing clothes or a torpedo buoy, or even towing a fellow member. Why 60? Well, this year the RLSS Sussex Branch celebrates its 60th year of lifesaving. Each registered participant that completes the challenge and returns their sponsorship form will receive a 60th anniversary commemorative badge. If you would like to take up the Swim 60 Challenge please register here and download a copy of the sponsorship from from here.

Lifesaving Competitions

It is going to be a busy summer of Lifesaving Competitions to come! We would like to thank all those who volunteer to support these events across Sussex and the South East Region. Without you, we would not have such fantastic lifesaving events for our competitors. 
Entries for the RLSS Sussex Beach Lifeguard Championships and RLSS Sussex Rookie Festival on the 8th July 2017, are still open. Please register with your club to attend.
Sussex is also looking for representatives at the SER Beach Championships in July. Please contact Zoe if you would like to participate.

SER Mixed Pairs Results

On Sunday 30th April, the South East Regional Mixed Pairs Lifesaving Championships were held in Rochester. Congratulations to our Sussex representatives, Kyle Stewart and Zoe Jones from Eastbourne Voluntary Lifeguards, who won the Senior Mixed Pairs.

Sussex Life Support Results

On Tuesday 30th May, the Sussex Branch Life Support Championships were held at the K2 in Crawley. Congratulations to Ellyn Reeve, who showed great life support skills to win overall. A huge thank you to Crawley Town Lifesaving Club who co-organised and ran this event.

Sussex Schools Lifesaving Championship Results

Well done to all those that took part in the Sussex Schools Lifesaving Championships on Sunday 11th June at Bedes School. A full copy of the results can be found here. The winners were:

Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships

Congratulations to the members of Crawley Town LSC and Beacon LSC that have been selected to represent England in the Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships. Good luck!

Lifesaving Instructors Course

Sunday 19tth AND Saturday 25th November 2017 at Moria House School, Eastbourne. Details and application forms will be on the Branch website, or please contact Di Cooke, di.cooke@outlook.com  Places will be limited and strictly on a first come first served basis.

Club News

Beacon Lifesaving Club

On the 1st July, BLSC will be hosting a quiz night, and welcome members across the branch to participate. If you would like to enter a team please contact BLSC.
The club will be sharing their knowledge and holding a bottle tombola to raise finds for new club equipment at the Crowborough Summer Fair on Saturday 8th July. Any bottles, big or small, you are able to donate will be appreciated.

Hastings Voluntary Lifeguards

Hastings Voluntary Lifeguards kicked off a busy summer of providing water safety and first aid cover for local events, by supporting their local Rowing Regattas. They have also been supporting a local Guides group achieve their water safety badges.
Later in the summer you will be able to find HVLG promoting drowning prevention at the Hastings Beer Festival Family day on Saturday 8th July, and at the Hastings Carnival on Saturday 5th August.

King Alfred Lifesaving Club

King Alfred Lifesaving Club will be supporting the open day at Brighton Preston Circus Fire Station on Saturday 22nd July, proving water safety and CPR advice to the community. If you are able to support during the day, please contact them, or come along on the day. 

Eastbourne Voluntary Lifeguards

Eastbourne Voluntary Lifeguards have recently purchased and installed a public defibrillator on their Clubhouse thanks to the generosity of Frank Deadman, who left a donation to the club in his will, and to their hard work fundraising last year.
EVLG caught the attention of many at the Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival thanks to Perry and the Eastbourne Lifeguard Mascot who shared the SAFE Code on the journey.
The club has started their season of providing water safety and first aid cover for many local events, with the Eastbourne Triathlon. Events to come, include Eastbourne Rowing Regatta, Airbourne and the Beach Life Festival. If you are able to help at any events, please contact the club. 
On the 15th and 16th July, EVLG will be teaming up with RLSS Surrey Branch to run Survive and Save Beach Awards. If you are interested in attending please contact the club. 

Worthing Lifesaving Club

Worthing Lifesaving Club have been very busy with awards so far this year including Survive and Save Bronze and Silver Medallions and Silver Sport Awards, alongside NRASTC awards. They hope to run an Assistant Teachers Award in the coming months for younger members and to begin running some Save a Life courses in the near future.

Horsham Lifesaving Club

Horsham Lifesaving Club completed a total of 117 lengths in 55mins in March for their annual Towathon! Well done!
Alongside Crawley Town LSC Horsham LSC spend a day promoting drowning prevention messages and collecting funds for RLSS UK earlier in the year.
The club has been successfully running Save a Baby's Life courses for members of the local community, which will continue through the year.

Crawley Town Lifesaving Club have worked with Horsham LSC promoting drowning prevention messages and collecting funds for RLSS UK earlier in the year.
The club has been successfully running Save a Baby's Life courses for members of the local community, which will continue through the year.
Later in the year, their annual Lifesaving Competition will be held at the K2, please save the date Saturday 2nd December Full details will be shared in due course.
